There are wide varieties of reasons which may cause uveitis. It may range from autoimmune disorders to infections to unknown reasons.
• Autoimmune condition: It is the abnormality of self defence system. In this condition; body starts reacting against normal structures of the body itself.
• Infections (virus, bacteria, and protozoa): Variety of infections may lead to uveitis, most common in India is tuberculosis.
• Eye surgeries: sometimes after cataract surgery Lymphoma and leukemias ( type of blood cancer)
• Unknown causes
Patients commonly experiences intermittent attacks of redness, pain and increased sensitivity to sunlight, decrease in vision.
As uveitis is associated with other systemic conditions; eye specialist consults with other specialty doctors like chest physicians, rheumatologists, pathologist, and radiologists to investigate and treat this condition in best possible manner. For finding a cause; blood investigations and sometimes x-ray, CT scans are necessary. Sometimes, systemic drugs like steroids are necessary to treat.
Uveitis can be recurrent; therefore proper follow up of patient is necessary. Long duration of uveitis may lead to cataract and increased intraocular pressure and macular (part of retina) oedema. Therefore; timely treatment by eye specialist is mandatory.
In the initial stages it may not affect your vision; but long term uveitis can decrease vision. Some patients may face decrease in vision from start of disease.
It depends on the severity of the disease and the time when we start the treatment. Mostly if patients come early to eye specialist when disease is not severe, then disease can be controlled easily within some days; but treatment may continue for 1-3 months.
Mostly patient need anti-inflammatory eye drops. Some patients may need to take steroid tablets. If some complication is present then surgical treatment and eye injections may be necessary.
Mostly steroids are given for short duration and low dose; therefore chances of adverse effects are minimal.
As this condition is associated with systemic diseases; blood investigations and other scans like x-ray and CT are sometimes necessary. It will help eye specialist to find the exact cause of this condition.
