At 18 million, India has the largest number of visually impaired persons in the world.
The project proposes to establish a tertiary speciality eye hospital at Shimoga in Karnataka. The centre would form the backbone towards the provision of comprehensive eye care services to children between the ages of 0 – 15 years.
Karnataka with a population of 54.4 million has a blindness prevalence of over 1.6%. Shimoga which falls almost in the centre of the Karnataka map is surrounded by districts which have very poor eye care. A study on the incidence of cataract in the age group above 50 years which is indicative of the level of eye care delivery has shown between 4-7% of the population to have cataract.
The facility on completion would have 200 beds to provide eye care facilities free of cost to the needy. In addition there would be a facility to house 25 patients who would be provided subsidised eye care. All the latest diagnostic aids and trained dedicated manpower would make it a comprehensive eye care centre.

At present there is no speciality eye centre offering tertiary eye care services in the region. Most of those requiring higher level of eye care are referred to Bangalore. We have experience of working in this region. In association with local philanthropists we have performed 2 surgical camps at Bhadravathi, where more than 200 have benefited.
