Patient registration: Local volunteers record the patient details - name, age and address Patients are issued identity cards, which may be used for any future follow-up.
Preliminary vision testing: Preliminary vision testing is performed by paramedical staff using visual acuity charts.
Preliminary ophthalmic examination: Doctors perform the preliminary examination. Clinical conditions such as external eye infections, vision loss caused by nutritional deficiency are treated with medications. Those suffering from incurable blindness are advices rehabilitation and those with surgically curable disease are selected.
Tension and duct examination: Glaucoma a silent blinding disease is more commonly seen in those over the age of 40.All those over the age of 40 and those selected for surgery or with complaints of watering undergo these series of tests to record their intraocular pressure and to check the patency of their naso lacrimal system.
General physical check up: all the patients selected for surgery undergo a check of their blood pressure and pulse to evaluate their general health status. Urine sugar is also estimated to rule out any diabetes.
Patients advised for surgery are motivated by the counsellor to undergo surgery at the hospital. Patients counselled at the campsite are registered in IP register and transported to the base hospital for surgery. These patients receive surgery, postoperative care, meals, and round-trip transportation all free of cost.
A detailed report is given to the partners in eye care. This would include statistics as to the total out patients seen , the number adviced to undergo surgical procedures and those deemed unfit to travel etc. further communication would be provided on the patients reaching the base hospital and on the culmination of services when the patients are dropped back after receiving the gift of vision. |
