Gift of Vision - Rural Outreach Eyecare Programme
More often than not, visual handicap is completely or partially curable. It is up to us to reach out to the less privileged and make their lives brighter with the Gift of Vision.
Weekly rural outreach eye camps , to identify individuals suffering from corneal blindness, cataract, glaucoma and other eye ailments, to provide patients with medical and surgical treatment, free of cost. Gift of vision serves the rural population of Tamilnadu, Kerala, Pondicherry and Karnataka.
This is a need based program which caters to India’s huge population of visually handicapped. One fifth of the world’s cataract is in India and four million new cases are being added to the existing backlog.
It is a sad fact that 1/5 th of the world's population of blind live in India, and 4 million new cases of curable blindness are being added to the existing backlog, annually. More often than not, visual handicap is completely or partially curable. It is up to us to reach out to the less privileged and make their lives brighter with the Gift of Vision.
This is a rural Out-Reach Eye Care Program supported by District Blindness Control Society, Sankara Eye Foundation USA and Sight Savers (U.K). It was started as a joint program in 1990 with the active participation of Rotary International and Rotary Coimbatore Central, and covers the states of Tamilnadu, Pondicherry, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka targeting the economically weaker sections.
The programme treats patients with surgically curable blindness including cataract, glaucoma, retinal ailments and even paediatric eye diseases such as squint. |
|
A target rural population of 10,000 to 15,000 is taken up for screening for a camp.
On the day of the camp, a team from Sankara Eye Center, conducts the eye screening in the village school . Those who require medicines are provided with them, free of cost.

|
Patients brought to base hospital are provided Transportation, Accommodation, Investigation, Surgery, Intra ocular Lens Implantation, Post operative medicines and food are given free of cost.
These patients are dropped back at their respective villages between 3rd and 4th day after surgery with necessary medication and instruction.
|
Any programme without proper follow up is incomplete. Gift of Vision patients are meticulously and systematically followed up after 30 days to assess the visual recovery and make a qualitative analysis of the performance – an exercise unique to this institution.
Under the “Gift of Vision” we do not wait for the patient to come to us but reach out to them through our network of field staff, doctors and paramedics.
