Sankara Eye Centre currently offers advanced clinical training in the following ophthalmic subspecialties: Comprehensive ophthalmology; Community eye care; Cornea External Diseases and Refractive Surgery and glaucoma.
With 35 full time staff assisted by 150 paramedical and support staff we provide well-rounded exposure to both the clinical and academic sides of all specialties of ophthalmology.
The Sankara Eye Centre Training Program in Ophthalmology is a highly regarded ophthalmology program in India. Its longstanding reputation derives from its association with state-of-the-art facilities, a full range of clinical and surgical experiences, and, most importantly, the sincere commitment of the faculty to resident education.
Residents are selected amongst those who have completed their post graduation in ophthalmology from any of the centres recognized by the Medical Council of India. Residents benefit from hands-on surgical experience in all areas of specialization.
The goal of the program is to train highly competent and ethical ophthalmologists who can contribute to the field and help reduce the burden of curable blindness.

| Phacoemulsification Training |
The aim of the Short term Phacoemulsification Training Programme is to provide a comprehensive and structured surgical training programme based on the experience of the surgeons at Sankara.
This program has 2 position available and the program lasts 1 month. More information may be obtained by contacting Dr. Y Umesh, Coordinator Training and Fellowship. The programme would be divided over the 4 week period to include approximately 30 surgeries*.
The graded progression of training would commence with Pre-operative evaluation and post-operative care of cataract patients. Trainees would be encouraged to observe sugeries being performed and would be training to perform diagnostic procedures like biometry, keratometry and biomicroscopic evaluation.
Subsequently they would be taught steps of the surgery.
Each trainee will be assigned to a member of the faculty for the full training period. Trainees are encouraged to discuss all aspects of their surgical experience and techniques with the faculty. The training may be terminated if the trainee’s performance and attitude to patient care services does not measure up to the Institute's expectations. The trainee’s performance will be evaluated regularly.

| Fellowship in Comprehensive Ophthalmology |
The fellowship in comprehensive ophthalmology combines the virtues of compassionate care and sound clinical judgment with the technological resources of a specialty eye care institution. Surgeons would be able to participate in the outreach activities of the centre. Apart from perfecting their skills in outpatient procedures, ophthalmic diagnostics, and cataract surgery, they would be rotated through various specialties and can gain from the exceptional depth of experience. |
| Fellowship in Cornea & Anterior Segment Surgery |
The Cornea Service at Sankara Eye Centre is a consulting service in corneal and external disease and refractive surgery with an emphasis on keratoplasty. It offers a fellowship of two years. Keratoplasties, Deep Lamellar Keratoplasties, Pterygium excisions and autografts are performed. The centre is also involved in the development of keratoprosthesis.
We have the Schwind ESIRIS excimer laser and perform LASIK, LASEK and PRK. It is anticipated that fellows would assist on 75 to 100 keratoplasties and perform 40 to 60 keratoplasties themselves. Fellows will also participate in a program of laboratory and clinical research as well as refractive surgery. The fellow's responsibility is to the Cornea and External Ocular Disease Service, with clinics during all weekdays.

During the Glaucoma Fellowship you would be able to master laser procedures, glaucoma filtering surgery, rational use of wound-modulation agents, releasable suture closure techniques, trabeculectomy combined with cataract extraction, tube-shunt implants, and management of the failing bleb.
In addition, the fellow will learn to perform and interpret a variety of clinical tests including visual fields, optic disc analysis, and optic disc image analysis.
The fellowship carries a stipend for the first and second year. Accommodation will be provided on a twin share basis on the campus if available. Subsidized vegetarian food is available through the hospital cafeteria
