About 1/5th of the blind population live in India with around 4 million being added every year which is increasing the existing population of people with visual impairment many folds.To combat this situation, a colossal effort on the part of individuals and organisations is required.
Realising this need, Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Medical Trust initiated the formation of Sankara Eye Centre with the following objectives in mind :

To establish eye banks and peripheral eye donor forums for different regions of our country.

Institutions have been further established with support from philanthropists and donor agencies – Sankara Eye Hospital, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh and Sankara Rural Eye Hospital, Krishnankovil in southern Tamilnadu.
It has been recognized as a post graduate training institute by the Diplomate of the National board, National Association for Prevention of Blindness, Government of India and Sri Chandrashekarendra Saraswathy Vishwa Mahavidyalaya (Deemed University),
