28th January, 2005 – Botox Clinic launched at Hotel Heritage Inn



As our commitment to providing the latest in therapeutic care, we offer Botox services at all our institutions. Already patients with hemi facial spasms and tics have benefited. Cosmetic enhancement procedures also would be offered at this state of the art clinic.

1st -10th February, 2005 – Training of Community Eye Heath (CEH) Members from Gudalur organised with Sight Savers International.




In association with our long time partner we have undertaken to comprehensively cover the underserved Gudalur region, of Nilgiris district. Members of the local NGO were trained in preliminary field work and health education by our faculty.

Doctors and staff who have worked more than 5 years were felicitated. It was an opportunity for us in India to interact with the board members of SEF, USA who were the guests of honour. Truly an evening to remember

10th April 5, 2005 – CME at Sankara Eye Hospital, Guntur A day long interactive forum was conducted at the hosptial auditorium on Small Incision Cataract Surgery and Glaucoma. An interactive format with video assisted skill transfer helped delegates understand the intricasies of glaucoma and cataract management. Recent trends in glaucoma management including the use of the Ahmed Glaucoma Valve were dealt with.

The faculty included Dr JK Reddy,Assistant Director and Dr Ajitha.S Frcs.Ed, Chief Glaucoma Services in addition to our consultants from Cataract Services,Glaucoma Clinic and Department of Vitreoretina Sankara Eye Hospital,Guntur.

26th June,2005 - Meeting on Grief Counseling for Hospital Cornea Retrieval ProgrammeTo enhance retrieval of corneas from the deceased, a one day workshop on grief counseling was conducted at our eye bank. ICU administrators from all leading hospitals from Coimbatore were invited. The HCRP is a collective decision by the government, NGOs and the Eye Bank Association of India to motivate families of critically ill patients at hospitals to donate the eyes of their beloved at the time of their demise.

The ICU staff were intorduced to the concept of grief counseling and were explained about the various facets of eye donation.

6th July, 2005 - Award of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) to our ChairmanThe Chairman of our trust S V Balasubramaniam would be awarded the degree of Doctor of Science by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University from the premier Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, during its centenary year, bestowed on him by the Chancellor of the university.

The Doctorate was awarded by the Governor of Tamilnadu Shri Surjit Singh Burnalla in the august presence of the First citizen of the Nation, our beloved Rashtrapathiji
Dr A P J Abdul Kalam.


8th July 2005 -Meeting of State level NGOs in community eye care


A day long meeting of all NGOs involved in community eye care in Tamilnadu was held at the hospital. Dr Bachani ADG(O), DGHS, New Delhi and Project Director ,Dr Mohan Raj from Chennai participated in the deliberations which set the tone for revision of guidelines for various NGOs involved in community eye care.

The Rotary Club of Vaniyambadi as a part of the centenary year of Rotary, recognised the work of Dr J K Reddy in the field of eye care and honoured him by awarding the "Centinnial For The Sake of Honour" at function in the presence of rotarians and citizens from across Vellore District.

28th July 2005 - CME - Update in Occuloplasty and Botox®
The hospital in association with the Coimbatore Ophthalmologists Association conducted a CME in occuloplasty.

This CME was organised with a particular emphasis on providing an Update in Occuloplasty and Use of BOTOX® in ophthalmology. Dr. Sapthagirish Rambatla, Consultant Occuloplasty Surgeon from Chennai and Dr Umesh , Department of Occuloplasty at Sankara, shared their experiences in the, “Use of Botox® in ophthalmology” and also introduced the audience to recent trends in occuloplasty.

15 th August 2005 – Vandematharam –Salute to the freedom fighters We are proud of the freedom fighters who dedicated their lives to our country. If today we are proud of India being the leader in IT and various other fields it is because of their sacrifices and love for the nation.

Sankara salutes them. On the occasion of Independence Day we thought it apt to launch a project to provide quality eye care to them free of cost. The collector of Guntur District distributed these cards to the freedom fighters.

17th September 2005 - Natiya Drishti - A fusion dance balletSankara Eye Foundation Europe organised a spectacular dance programme at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, London to raise awareness of the activities of the Sankara Eye Care Insitutions and helped generate funds for its new hospital at Shimoga, India.

The programme featured Gauri Sharma Tripathi an exponent of Kathak and Geetha Sridhar, alumnus of the prestigious Kalakshetra dance school and their students who kept the audience awestruck with their ensemble.


29th September 2005 - CME on Current Concepts in Glaucoma Diagnosis
In continuation with our effort to expose the post graduates and consultants practising in various institutions across Coimbatore and the surrounding districts, Sankara in association with the Coimbatore Ophthalmic Association has organised a talk by Dr Murali Ariga, Consultant at the Sundaram Medical Foundation, Chennai. He would talk on the recent trends in the diagnosis on glaucoma. This would be followed by a talk on the practical problems faced in eye banking by our Director Dr S Balasubramaniam.

1 & 2nd October, 2005- XVIth Annual Conference Oculoplastic Association of India
Our consultant Dr Saptagirish Rambhatla has been invited as faculty by the Dept of Ophthalmology, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh. He would be the co-chairperson for the session on free paper presentation and the convener on the session on, Eyelids for the general ophthalmologist. He has been asked to share his expertise on Dacrocystorhinostomy and Cosmetic Blepharoplasty.

2nd Oct 2005 - 10th Dr R K Seth Medical Symposium
A national symposium on community eye care a first of its kind is being organised by the Venu Eye Insitute, New Delhi. Dr R V Ramani has been invited to give a key note address on ,"Strategies in Planning & Management of Childhood Blindness"

13th October 2005 - World Sight DayVision is the gift of God. The endeavor of the Sankara Eye Care Institutions has been affordable superspeciality eye care to all. Every year the World Sight Day, gives us an unique opportunity to reach out to thousands with a message on preventive eye care and also help us educate them about the activities of our institution.

At the base hospital at Coimbatore a variety of events to reach out to all groups of population was been organised. Hoardings with messages campaigning for eye donation and yearly screening have been displayed at a prominent area of the city with the City Police Department. As a tribute to our senior citizens a screening programme for all inmates of the Sheela Senior Citizen home was done.

13th October 2005 - World Sight DayThe Southern Railways has joined hands in our Mission for Vision and on the 13th a booth to educate the public about eye diseases was kept at the city railway station.

As a part of rehabilitative eye care services low vision aids play an important role. On this apt occasion the Sankara Low Vision Clinic, is being established in association with Sight Savers International.

Sankara is today a premier post graduate training institute. As a part of its continuing medical education programme, a talk on ," The role of the Pathology Lab in Ophthalmology", by Dr Krishna Venkateshwaran MD DNB, was organised at the hospital seminar hall.

The Sankara Eye Hospital, Guntur along with its paediatric eye care partner Orbis International, has reached out to thousands of children with preventive and curative eye care since its inception last year.

In continuation with its innovative approach to preventive eye care and health education a touch screen kiosk patient information system was installed at the hospital.

The institution is observing an entire week of educational and awareness activities. The focus is to make the community aware of the importance of eye care, the magnitude of blindness and how this can be treated prevented.

School children are invited in batches. They would not onle visit the centre but would be educated through an audio visual presentation on the various aspects of eye care. The significance of the young inquisitive mind in paying some attention on this topic will benefit the community at large was conveyed. Banners are displayed across the town on the observance of World Sight Day

28th October 2005 – Bhoomi Pooja of Sankara Eye Hospital at Bangalore The much awaited Boomi Pooja - Brick laying function of Sankara Eye Hospital Bangalore,was held today in the presence of the Honarable Governor of Karnataka, Sri. T.N. Chathurvedi.

The bhoomi pooja was performed by our chairman Dr. S.V.Balasubramainam. The Governor in his addressed commended the efforts of Sankara eye care institutions in India and the Sankara eye foundation in the USA and said it was a pioneering one.

Sun, pristine beaches, one of the top destinations to spend the millennium New Year celebrations, a state blessed with natures bounty. These are some of the first thoughts that come to mind when one talks about “Goa”. However there is another sad aspect that does not warrant much media attention and often not given significance; a state which spans a little more than 3700 square kilometers is also home to a large population of curable blind.

The Mineral Foundation of Goa, in association with the Salgoancar Medical Centre was quite keen to help the people and it was for this noble cause that Sankara Eye Centre joined hands with them. Through 10 surgical camps over the past 3 years it has operated on more than 850 cataract cases and literally given a new lease of life to these people.

A majority of the 107 beneficiaries belong to the mining areas and attend this camp with hope and a belief that a Miracle would cure them. Sharing our commitment were band of volunteers from the Balaji temple trust.

Dr. Mallikarjun Chatnalli our senior resident made a presentation Outcome of Therapeutic Keratoplasty in patients who presented to our insitute over the past year with either perforated cornea or with a non healing ulcer.

11th November 2005 – Launch of Coimbatore district paediatric comprehensive eye care servicesChildhood Blindness describes a number of diseases and conditions that occur in childhood and early adolescence. 28% of these are preventable and 15% are treatable, but if left untreated they can result in years of blindness.

Combating childhood blindness has been identified by the World Bank as the most cost-effective of health interventions. It is considered a priority area in global blindness prevention due to the number of years of blindness that will ensue, keeping children from contributing to their communities.

11th November 2005 – Launch of Coimbatore district paediatric comprehensive eye care servicesAs a part of our ongoing initiative to prevent curable blindness among children, the Sankara Eye Centre, in association with Sight Savers International.UK and the District Blindness Control Society has instituted Comprehensive Eye Care Services for children of the Thondamuthur, Sarkar Samakulam and Avinashi Blocks in Coimbatore District.

The Project would provide comprehensive eye care from preventive screening programme to curative surgeries and in association with the IHRDC, Coimbatore and the Low Vision Services at Sankara Eye Centre would provide rehabilitative eye care to those incurably blind.

Mr Andrew Tait and Shrivas Sawant from Sight Savers and Dr M N G Mani , Dean of the Vivekananda Deemed University, Coimbatore were the Guests of Honour.Mr N Krishnakumar President of the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Central also participated in the formal launch held at the hospital premises.



20th November 2005 – CME on Refractive Surgery – Options and Obstacles
Coimbatore Ophthalmologists Association and Sankara Eye Centre jointly conducted a CME Programme on 20-11-05, Thursday at Hotel Residency. The programme was attended by 125 ophthalmologists from Coimbatore, Nilgiris and Palakkad Districts. The topic was – “Refractive Surgery – Options and Obstacles”. The speaker was Dr. M.S. Sridhar, M.S from Hyderabad. He was Ex-Consultant LVPEI and currently associated with Krishna Institute of Medical Services Hyderbad. At the end of the main session, there was a question and answer session in which many participants cleared their doubts.

The very next day on 21-10-2005, Friday, Dr. Sridhar conducted an exclusive programme for the Doctor fraternity of Sankara Eye Centre. The topic dealt was – Difficult situations in Cataract Surgery. The programme was very much interactive and many participants came out with their experiences.


November 25 to 27 2005 OASIS DRISHTI - Conference of the Ophthalmic Association of South India and Srilanka (OASIS).
November 25 to 27 2005 OASIS DRISHTI - Conference of the Ophthalmic Association of South India and Srilanka (OASIS).The first ever conference of the Ophthalmic Association of South India and Srilanka (OASIS) was held between November 25th to 27th 2005.It was hosted by the Kerala Society of Ophthalmic Surgeons at Thiruvananthapuram.

Doctors from Sankara presented papers on innovations in cataract surgery with the use of mutifocal implants. The initial results of the Kovai-Keratoprosthesis, which has been developed by the Cornea Department of Sankara was presnted. We have been among the pioneers in preventive eye care for children. Our screening programmes have brought out interesting insights which have helped our associated institutions and peers to modify their methodology to effectively reach out to this vulnerable population. Our experience in screening for hypermetropes and the association of refractive errors with educational attainment among these children was also presented at this fora.One of the presentations was selected for the Dr Siva Reddy Awards Session.

18th December 2005 -“Trends in Paediatric Opthalmology", CME at Sankara, Guntur .
18th December 2005 -“Trends in Paediatric Opthalmology", CME at Sankara, Guntur .As part of ongoing professional updating, Sankara Eye Hospital , Guntur in collaboration with ORBIS international conducted a CME on 18th December 2005 . The objective of the CME was to deliberate on the issues concerned with eye problems in children.

The latest developments in this field were brought out by speakers from Sankara Eye Care Institutions - Dr. J K Reddy, Dr. Umesh , Dr. Sapthagirish Rambhatla and Dr. Ravi Shankar H N.


The topics included :

  • Our approach to Paediatric cataract surgery

  • Optometric management of children – hints and tips

  • Recent advances in clinical research of Retinopathy Of Prematurity (ROP)

  • Epiphora in paediatric patients

    Each lecture was followed by extensive discussion with participation of the delegates. It was followed by a talk on the Alcon ACCURUS combined anterior & posterior segment surgical system that was recently installed in the hospital.

Around 35 Opthalmologists from Guntur , Krishna and Prakasham districts participated in the CME.
